Colorado Health Insurance Laws and Regulations

Under Colorado health insurance law, the health insurance companies in the private market are required to follow certain guidelines.

In Colorado, all individual health insurance policies are guaranteed renewable meaning coverage cannot be canceled as a policyholder ages or gets sick.

In addition, all Colorado health insurance plans must cover certain medical services and screening. They include:

  • Screening for breast and prostate cancer
  • Treatment for certain diabetes-related conditions
  • Continuity of care for pregnant women
  • Children's vaccinations

Colorado health insurance companies also must offer equal coverage limits and maximums for mental health conditions as physical health condition's also called "mental health parity."

Residents in Colorado have protection under the federal law HIPAA, and continuation of group health coverage from a former employer under COBRA. Colorado workers may keep coverage for up to 18 months with Colorado's continuation coverage, which is similar to COBRA benefits.

After COBRA benefits are used, a Colorado employee can purchase a conversion policy if eligible.
